That open area in front of an electrical panel is not extra storage. It is working space, and the National Electrical Code protects it for a reason: electricians and emergency personnel need room to safely access, operate, maintain, and disconnect equipment.
NEC Section 110.26 applies to working space about electrical equipment that is likely to require examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance while energized.
The basic requirements inspectors and contractors should remember include:
- The working space must be at least 30 inches wide, or the width of the equipment, whichever is greater.
- The required depth depends on the conditions in front of the equipment. For equipment rated 0-150 volts to ground, the minimum depth is generally 3 feet, with greater depth required in certain conditions.
- The working space must extend from the floor or platform to at least 6 1/2 feet, or the height of the equipment, whichever is greater.
- The space must be kept clear. Boxes, shelving, stored materials, appliances, and other obstructions cannot turn the required access area into a closet.
- The entrance to the working space must allow ready access and egress. An open equipment door cannot block the required path.
There is also a dedicated equipment space requirement. The area above the equipment generally must be kept free from foreign systems and other equipment, with limited exceptions and specific protection requirements.
The reason behind these dimensions is practical, not arbitrary. A person working on energized equipment needs room to stand, move, use tools, and get out of the space quickly if something goes wrong. Crowded panels create hazards before anyone ever touches a conductor.
One important reminder: the NEC edition and amendments adopted by the authority having jurisdiction control the inspection. Always verify the edition and local modifications before applying a requirement to a specific project.
